Add glossy green structure to a desk or side table with this live ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), also called Zanzibar Gem. Thick, upright stalks carry pairs of smooth, oval to elliptic leaflets with a waxy sheen. Underground rhizomes store water, giving the plant its forgiving character.

Points of interest and size

  • One live standard green ZZ Plant, approximately 8–12 inches tall in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • Estimated mature indoor size: roughly 2–4 feet tall and wide.
  • Stem count, leaf size, height and fullness vary naturally.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light encourages growth. It tolerates lower light, though growth may slow; avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight.
  • Water: Let the potting mix dry substantially, ideally most of the way through, before watering thoroughly and allowing all excess to drain. Water less often in winter or lower light; soggy soil can rot rhizomes and roots.
  • Soil: Use a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix, optionally amended with perlite or pumice, in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average indoor humidity is generally suitable. Keep warm and protected from cold drafts or freezing temperatures.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to the label every 4–8 weeks. Avoid heavy feeding and pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowed or damaged stalks near the base with clean shears; healthy stalks do not need frequent trimming. Rotate the pot occasionally for balanced growth.
  • Repotting: Check every 1–2 years; if rhizomes crowd the pot, move up one pot size in spring using fresh, draining mix. Do not bury rhizomes deeply or leave the new mix soggy.
  • Propagation: Divide an established plant at repotting, keeping rhizomes and roots with each section. Leaf or stem cuttings can also root in water or a moist, airy mix but may take many months to form a new rhizome.

Pet safety

Not pet-safe: ZZ Plant contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from cats, dogs and children.
