Variegated Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum), 4-Inch Pot
Bring graceful stripes to a bright shelf with this variegated spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). Narrow green-and-cream leaves arch outward in a lively fountain shape. As an established plant grows, it may produce long stems with small plantlets.
Size and what ships
One live variegated spider plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot. Leaf length, fullness, and any existing plantlets vary at shipping. With suitable care the plant may become broader and produce trailing offsets over time; a mature hanging display is not what ships.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect light supports clear striping and steady growth. It can tolerate somewhat lower light, but avoid harsh direct afternoon sun.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the upper inch of potting mix feels dry, then let excess drain. Reduce frequency in cooler months and avoid letting the pot sit in water.
- Soil: Use an airy, well-draining indoor potting mix in a pot with drainage.
- Temperature and humidity: Normal warm indoor temperatures and average household humidity generally suit it. Keep away from frost and strong drying vents.
- Feeding: Feed lightly with diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer during spring and summer growth if needed; excess fertilizer can contribute to browned tips.
- Grooming and repotting: Trim dry leaf tips with clean scissors and repot one size up if roots crowd the pot.
- Propagation: If the mature plant grows plantlets, they can be rooted in water or potting mix and separated when established.
Pet safety
Spider plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though pets should be discouraged from chewing leaves.
Optional planter
The 4-inch nursery pot fits inside the white Basel 4.7-inch planter with a little room around it. The Basel planter in the styled photo is sold separately; the plant ships in its nursery grow pot. Furnishings are not included.
