Swiss Cheese Plant (Philodendron adansonii), 4-Inch Pot
The Swiss Cheese Plant (Philodendron adansonii) grows as a climbing or trailing vine with green leaves that develop distinctive oval openings, called fenestrations. Give it a bright shelf or a small support and enjoy its lively leaf pattern as it grows. Leaf size, hole pattern, fullness, and vine length vary naturally; younger leaves may have fewer openings.
Size and what ships
One live Philodendron adansonii in a 4-inch nursery grow pot. The exact height and trailing length when shipped vary. Given suitable care and a support, vines can lengthen and leaves can become larger over time; the mature appearance is not what ships.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect light supports healthy growth and fenestration. It can tolerate somewhat lower light but growth may slow; avoid harsh direct afternoon sun.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top inch or so of mix begins to dry, then let excess drain. Adjust for season and light instead of using a fixed calendar schedule.
- Soil: Use an airy, moisture-retentive yet draining aroid mix with bark or perlite in a pot with drainage.
- Humidity and temperature: Moderate indoor humidity helps prevent dry leaf edges. Keep warm and away from freezing drafts and hot dry vents.
- Feeding: During spring and summer growth, apply diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer about monthly if needed; reduce in winter.
- Pruning and support: Trim long stems above a node to encourage branching, or offer a moss pole or trellis to let it climb.
- Repotting: Move one size up when roots crowd the nursery pot, retaining an airy draining mix.
- Propagation: Stem cuttings with at least one node can root in water or moist mix; a leaf without a node will not grow into a vine.
