Care guide
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light supports colorful veins. Keep out of harsh direct sun, which can scorch leaves; very dim spots slow growth.
- Water: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, never waterlogged. Check regularly and water as the surface begins to dry, letting excess drain. Avoid letting the root ball dry completely.
- Soil: Use an airy, moisture-retentive houseplant mix with perlite in a container with drainage holes. Ready to repot? Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately. Maintain an airy texture while retaining enough moisture for this plant; add perlite as needed for drainage.
- Humidity and temperature: Moderate to high humidity helps prevent crisp leaf edges. Keep warm and away from cold drafts, hot vents and dry AC airflow.
- Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, use a balanced slow-release houseplant fertilizer according to its label directions. Ready to feed? Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Reduce or pause feeding in winter, and skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
- Pruning: Pinch tips for bushier growth and trim leggy stems or damaged leaves with clean scissors.
- Repotting: Check roots when the plant fills its pot. If crowded, move up one pot size in fresh airy mix without burying stems deeper.
- Propagation: Root healthy stem-tip cuttings with a node in water or lightly moist mix under warm bright indirect light.
Pet safety
Fittonia is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep plants out of reach of pets that chew leaves.
