Variegated Hoya Wayetii brings a bright cascade of narrow, waxy leaves to a sunny room, with creamy-yellow centers framed by green margins. Its arching stems and trailing growth make the foliage especially striking at eye level in a hanging display. Each leaf has its own pattern, giving this collector-favorite houseplant a character all its own.

Points of interest

  • Slender, gently curved leaves with contrasting green edges and pale centers.
  • Fleshy foliage stores moisture, so this Hoya prefers drying between thorough waterings rather than staying constantly wet.
  • Trailing stems suit a bright indoor hanging spot or an elevated shelf.
  • Mature plants may produce clusters of small, fragrant, reddish flowers under suitable conditions. Blooming is not guaranteed, and the plant is sold for its foliage.

What ships and estimated mature size

One live Variegated Hoya Wayetii growing in a 6-inch hanging grow pot. The 6-inch measurement refers to the pot diameter, not the plant height or vine length. Plant shape, fullness, trailing length, and variegation vary naturally; photos illustrate the plant's appearance rather than a guaranteed exact specimen.

Estimated mature size: With time and suitable care, stems can trail approximately 2–3 feet or more. Growth is often slower than on all-green Hoyas, and final size depends on growing conditions and pruning.

Decorative planters, display hooks, and other styling accessories are not included. Any optional decorative planter is sold separately.

Optional planter pairings

For an indoor shelf or tabletop display, explore our White BASEL 6-Inch Planter, Black BASEL 6-Inch Planter, White OSLO 6-Inch Planter, and Black OSLO 6-Inch Planter. Each planter is sold separately; this listing includes the plant in its hanging grow pot, not a decorative planter.

Both styles have a 6.3-inch opening. These decorative planters have no drainage holes. For this Hoya, retain a draining inner pot, remove it to water, and let it drain fully before returning it to the decorative planter. Do not leave water standing in the outer planter.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun can be suitable after gradual acclimation, but protect the pale foliage from intense afternoon sun and hot window glass. Low light can slow growth and flowering.
  • Water: Check the potting mix before watering. Let the upper portion dry and the pot become noticeably lighter, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Do not leave the pot standing in water. Adjust to the plant's conditions rather than following a fixed weekly schedule; cooler temperatures and lower light usually mean less frequent watering.
  • Potting mix and drainage: Use a loose, airy, fast-draining houseplant mix with materials such as orchid bark and perlite. Always use a pot with drainage. Avoid dense soil that remains saturated around the roots. Our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend is sold separately; amend with orchid bark and perlite as needed to provide the aeration a Hoya prefers.
  • Temperature and humidity: Grow in a warm room, ideally around 65–85°F. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and air-conditioning vents. Moderate household humidity is generally workable; higher humidity with good airflow can support growth. Avoid keeping the leaves continually wet.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately; follow its container-size directions and avoid combining full doses of different fertilizers. Do not fertilize a dry, stressed, or newly arrived plant. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows.
  • Pruning and flowering: Trim stems only as needed to shape the plant. Do not remove healthy bare runners simply because they have not produced leaves yet. If flowers develop, preserve the short flower-bearing spurs after blooming because Hoyas can bloom from them again.
  • Repotting and arrival care: Allow the plant to settle into its new environment before repotting. Hoyas generally tolerate a snug pot; move up only one pot size when roots crowd the container or the mix breaks down. On arrival, inspect the plant and check moisture before watering. Watch leaf joints and undersides for common houseplant pests such as mealybugs.

Pet safety: Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but chewing plant material can still cause stomach upset. Keep trailing stems away from pets and children.
