Bring a flash of burgundy to a bright shelf with Tradescantia ‘Red Gem’. Its pointed leaves show deep wine tones and ruby highlights in good light, while stems gradually spill over the edge of the pot. Leaf color and fullness vary naturally with growing conditions.

Size and what ships

One live Tradescantia ‘Red Gem’ in a 4-inch nursery grow pot. Plant height, fullness, and vine length vary at shipping. With suitable care, stems can grow longer and trail; mature growth is not the size delivered.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright indirect light to support strong color. Gentle morning sun can bring out red tones, but protect from intense afternoon sun to avoid scorch.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry, then let excess drain. Adjust to your light, temperature, and season rather than watering on a fixed schedule.
  • Soil: Choose a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix and a container with drainage.
  • Temperature and humidity: Keep in warm indoor conditions away from frost and heating vents. Average household humidity is generally suitable.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly with diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer about monthly during active spring and summer growth if needed; ease off in winter.
  • Pruning: Pinch back growing tips for bushier growth and trim leggy stems. Cuttings can refresh an older pot.
  • Propagation: Root short stem cuttings with nodes in water or lightly moist potting mix.

Pet safety

Tradescantia may irritate pets if chewed or contacted. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.

Optional planter

The 4-inch nursery pot fits inside the white Basel 4.7-inch planter with a little room around it. The Basel planter shown in the styled photo is sold separately; the plant ships in its nursery grow pot. Furnishings are not included.
