Plant characteristics
- Pot size: Arrives planted in a 4-inch nursery pot
- Foliage: Thick, oval leaves with naturally varied green, cream, pink, and purple striping
- Growth habit: Fast-growing, compact at first, then spreading and trailing as the stems lengthen
- Mature size: Typically remains about 3–6 inches tall, with trailing stems that can reach approximately 12–24 inches with suitable care
- Pet safety: Tradescantia sap can irritate skin and may cause mouth or digestive irritation if chewed. Keep this plant away from pets and children.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light to support strong growth and vivid pink coloring. Gentle morning sun can be beneficial, but harsh afternoon sun may scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, then allow excess water to drain. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, which can lead to root problems.
- Soil: Use a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix in a container with drainage holes. Adding perlite can improve drainage and airflow around the roots.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is usually suitable. Good airflow helps keep the foliage healthy, and consistently wet leaves should be avoided.
- Temperature: Keep in a warm location away from frost and cold drafts. It can enjoy a protected outdoor patio during suitable warm weather.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced houseplant fertilizer, diluted according to its label, about once a month during active spring and summer growth. Reduce or pause feeding during slower winter growth.
- Pruning: Nanouk grows quickly and may need regular pruning or cutting back to stay compact and full. Pinch or trim long growing tips to encourage branching, and remove sparse or damaged stems with clean scissors.
- Propagation: Stem cuttings root readily in water or moist potting mix. Cut just below a node, remove the lowest leaves, and place the node in water or soil.
