Points of interest and size

  • One live plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • A young plant when shipped; exact height and spread vary.
  • Typically forms a low mound approximately 4–6 inches tall and 8–12 inches wide, with stems extending farther as they trail. Pruning and conditions influence mature size.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light supports compact growth and foliage color. Gentle morning sun may suit an acclimated plant; avoid harsh direct afternoon sun. Low light can lead to stretched stems.
  • Water: Allow the upper inch of mix to dry before watering thoroughly and draining excess. Avoid soggy roots, standing water and prolonged complete drying. Water the medium rather than leaving water trapped between leaves. Reduce frequency in cooler, darker conditions.
  • Soil: Use loose, well-draining houseplant mix with perlite for aeration. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately; amend with perlite as needed. Use a nursery pot with drainage holes.
  • Temperature and humidity: Normal warm household temperatures and average indoor humidity are suitable. Protect from frost, cold drafts and drying vents. Provide gentle air circulation.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth according to fertilizer label directions. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Reduce or pause feeding during inactivity and extreme heat or cold. Avoid feeding stressed or newly repotted plants.
  • Pruning: Pinch or trim healthy stem tips with clean scissors to encourage branching. Remove damaged leaves and leggy stems as needed, without removing most healthy growth at once. Avoid sap contact with skin.
  • Repotting: Check roots every 1–2 years and move up one pot size when crowded. Use fresh airy mix and maintain the original planting depth. Handle brittle stems gently.
  • Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings with a node can root in clean water or lightly moist potting mix. Remove leaves that would sit below the water or soil line. A leaf alone will not produce a new plant.

Pet safety

Keep away from pets and children. Tradescantia sap can irritate skin, and chewing leaves may cause irritation or stomach upset. Wear gloves if sensitive.
