String of Watermelons Succulent (Curio herreanus), 4-Inch Pot

String of Watermelons (Curio herreanus, also known as Senecio herreanus) is a trailing succulent with plump, oval leaves marked by watermelon-like stripes. Its slender stems spill over the edge of a pot, bringing an unusual texture to a sunny indoor shelf or a sheltered outdoor display in frost-free weather.

Points of interest

  • Striped, beadlike foliage resembles miniature watermelons.
  • Green leaves may develop reddish-purple tones in brighter light; coloring varies with growing conditions.
  • Trailing stems suit an elevated shelf or a securely supported hanging container.
  • Water-storing leaves make a dry-between-waterings routine essential.

What ships and estimated mature size

You will receive one live String of Watermelons plant in a 4-inch nursery pot. Shipping length, fullness, and foliage color vary naturally. Decorative pots, display accessories, additional soil, and fertilizer are not included.

With suitable care, mature stems can trail approximately 1–3 feet, sometimes longer. This is an estimated mature length, not a guaranteed shipping size. Light, season, and pruning affect growth and fullness.

Optional growing supplies

For repotting, consider our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is an optional feeding supply; follow its label directions and feed sparingly. Both products are sold separately. Terracotta pots in styling photos are decorative props and are not included with the plant.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright indirect light with gentle morning sun after gradual acclimation. Let light reach the top of the pot to encourage fuller crown growth. Avoid sudden exposure to intense afternoon sun.
  • Water: Allow the potting mix to dry between thorough waterings, then drain fully. Check soil moisture rather than following a fixed calendar. Avoid leaving water around the crown or allowing the pot to stand in water. Reduce watering during slower winter growth.
  • Soil and drainage: Use a fast-draining succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes. Heavy, persistently wet soil and enclosed terrariums are unsuitable.
  • Temperature and humidity: Keep warm and frost-free. Normal indoor humidity is suitable; misting is unnecessary. Protect from cold drafts and prolonged outdoor rain.
  • Feeding: Fertilize lightly during active spring and summer growth according to the fertilizer label. Avoid overfeeding or combining multiple fertilizers.
  • Pruning: Trim long stems with clean scissors to maintain a compact display or encourage branching. Remove dried stems and handle the plump leaves gently.
  • Repotting: Repot when root-bound or when the mix has lost its drainage, using a container only slightly larger than the root ball. Support trailing stems to prevent breakage.
  • Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings with several nodes can be placed on a lightly moistened, well-draining mix with nodes touching the surface. Keep in bright indirect light and avoid saturation while roots establish.

Pet safety: Not safe for pets or children if eaten. Keep out of reach.
