String of Pickles (Othonna capensis) tumbles over the edge of its hanging pot on slender stems lined with plump, pickle-shaped leaves. In brighter light the green foliage may take on a purple blush, making this a lively accent for a well-lit hanging spot. You’ll receive one live rooted plant in a 6-inch hanging grow pot. Terracotta pots shown in styled photos are decorative props and are not included.

Points of interest: Narrow succulent leaves and flexible trailing stems create a cascading shape. Foliage color, fullness, and trail length vary with the individual plant and light conditions.

Size and growth: Ships in a 6-inch hanging nursery pot; actual vine length and fullness vary. With time, stems can extend beyond the pot and form a fuller cascade; mature trail length depends on conditions and trimming.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright light, with some gentle direct sun to encourage compact growth and purple tones. Gradually acclimate to stronger sun; shield from intense afternoon sun if leaves scorch.
  • Water: Water thoroughly after the soil has dried, then drain well. Check the basket before watering rather than following a fixed calendar; reduce watering in cooler, slower-growing periods.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent mix and a container with drainage holes. Never leave the basket standing in water.
  • Temperature: Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions. Keep in a bright indoor spot during chilly weather.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly with diluted succulent fertilizer during active growth if desired.
  • Pruning: Trim leggy or damaged stems with clean snips to shape the cascade. Rotate the basket for more even growth.
  • Repotting: Repot when rootbound into a draining hanging basket, supporting the stems gently as you work.
  • Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings may root in a gritty mix after the cut ends have dried; keep them in bright indirect light while establishing.

Pet and child safety: String of Pickles has mild toxicity if eaten. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children and prevent ingestion.
