Regular price
‘Netherlands’ Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) brings sculptural, antler-like fronds to a bright indoor space. This compact form has the character of a traditional staghorn fern while staying smaller, making it suitable for pots and baskets. Frond shape and fullness vary naturally.
Points of interest and size
- One fully rooted live fern in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
- A young plant when shipped; exact height and frond spread vary.
- Expect a broader clump as it matures, with fronds potentially extending a foot or more under suitable conditions. Container size and growing conditions influence mature spread.
What you receive
One live ‘Netherlands’ Staghorn Fern in its 4-inch nursery grow pot. This listing is not a mounted fern. Decorative planters, baskets and furnishings are not included.
Optional decorative planters
Pair it with the black BASEL 4.7-inch planter or white BASEL 4.7-inch planter. Decorative planters are sold separately and not included with the plant.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect or filtered light is ideal. Gentle early-morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun.
- Water: Keep the root area lightly moist, allowing the surface of the airy medium to begin drying between waterings. Water thoroughly and drain excess. Avoid soggy roots, standing water and prolonged complete drying. Reduce frequency in cooler, darker conditions.
- Soil: Use an airy, fast-draining epiphytic mix with orchid bark and perlite. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately; amend generously with bark and perlite rather than using a dense mix. Use a nursery pot with drainage holes.
- Temperature and humidity: Moderate to warm household temperatures and moderate humidity suit this fern. Protect from frost, cold drafts and drying vents. Provide gentle air circulation.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth, only where fertilizer label directions support fern use. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Apply to the potting medium according to the label, keeping granules away from the crown and fronds. Reduce or pause feeding during inactivity and extreme heat or cold. Avoid feeding stressed or newly repotted plants.
- Pruning: Remove only fully dead antler fronds as needed. Do not remove the protective shield fronds when they turn brown; this is normal. Avoid rubbing off the natural fuzzy coating on fronds.
- Repotting: Repot when roots or offsets crowd the container, using a modestly larger pot and fresh airy medium. Keep the crown and shield fronds above the medium and avoid burying them.
- Propagation: Established offsets can be divided once they have their own roots and fronds. Keep a young plant intact until it is large enough for division; a single frond will not grow a new plant.
Pet safety
