Hahnii ‘Ocean Star’ is a compact snake plant with sturdy, patterned leaves arranged in a sculptural rosette. Its small footprint makes it easy to enjoy on a bright shelf or desk. Each plant’s striping, edge color, fullness, and leaf height can vary.

Size and what ships

One live Hahnii ‘Ocean Star’ snake plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot. Exact height and leaf count vary at shipping. With time and suitable care, the rosette may become fuller and produce offsets; a mature clump is not what ships. Decorative planters and furnishings shown in styled photos are not included.

Optional decorative planters

Style your plant with the black BASEL 4.7-inch planter or the white BASEL 4.7-inch planter. Decorative planters are sold separately and are not included with the plant.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light supports steady growth and clear leaf markings. It can tolerate lower light, but growth will be slower; avoid sudden exposure to harsh direct sun.
  • Water: Let the potting mix dry well between thorough waterings, then drain excess. Water less often in winter or low light. Keep water from lingering in the center of the rosette.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent or cactus mix in a pot with drainage. If using our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately, amend it with extra perlite or pumice to create the fast-draining mix this snake plant needs; avoid a dense, moisture-retentive mix.
  • Temperature and humidity: Keep in normal warm indoor conditions away from frost. Average indoor humidity is suitable; avoid cold, wet soil.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly during active spring and summer growth, if needed, with a balanced slow-release houseplant fertilizer according to its label directions. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Reduce or pause feeding in winter, and skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged or spent leaves at the base with clean tools; avoid trimming healthy leaf tips or cutting into the center of the rosette.
  • Repotting: Repot one size up when roots crowd the pot, ideally in the growing season. Do not bury the leaf bases deeply.
  • Propagation: Mature plants may form offsets that can be divided when rooted. Leaf cuttings may not preserve a variegated plant’s original pattern.

Pet safety

Snake plants can cause stomach upset if eaten by pets. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
