Plant characteristics
- Pot size: Arrives planted in a 4-inch nursery pot
- Foliage: Thick, upright, sword-shaped green leaves with horizontal banding and yellow margins
- Growth habit: Compact rosette that gradually produces new shoots from underground rhizomes
- Mature size: Commonly reaches approximately 12–24 inches tall and gradually widens as new shoots develop
- Growth rate: Slow to moderate, with faster growth in warm conditions and bright indirect light
- Pet safety: Snake Plants contain saponins and are toxic if ingested by cats or dogs. Chewing may cause drooling, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Keep away from pets and children.
Care guide
- Light: Tolerates low light but grows best in medium to bright, indirect light. Low-light conditions usually produce slower growth. Avoid prolonged intense afternoon sun.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry completely before watering thoroughly. Water much less often during cool or low-light periods, and never leave the pot standing in water. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix in a container with drainage holes. Pumice or perlite can improve drainage.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is suitable. Good airflow and dry foliage help reduce the risk of rot.
- Temperature: Keep in a warm location and protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged temperatures below approximately 50°F.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant or succulent fertilizer diluted according to its label, generally every 4–6 weeks. Reduce or pause feeding during winter.
- Pruning: Remove damaged or declining leaves at the soil line with clean tools. Individual cut leaf tips will not regrow their original point.
- Propagation: Divide established clumps by separating rooted shoots and rhizomes. Division is the best method for preserving the yellow-edged variegation; plants grown from leaf cuttings may revert to solid green.
