Red Prayer Plant (Maranta), 6-Inch Hanging Pot
Red Prayer Plant (Maranta) displays oval green leaves with fine red veins and lighter markings along the center. Burgundy-toned undersides add another layer of color as the leaves shift position through the day and rise in the evening. Its spreading, gently trailing growth creates a richly patterned hanging display.
Points of interest
- Oval leaves with red veins and contrasting green markings.
- Burgundy-toned leaf undersides.
- Leaves change position through the daily light-and-dark cycle, inspiring the prayer plant name.
- Low, spreading growth that can trail over the container edge.
Current and mature size
You receive one rooted plant in a 6-inch plastic hanging nursery pot. The source describes representative plants approximately 10–12 inches tall; individual shipping height, spread, and fullness vary. Mature foliage generally remains relatively low while stems spread or trail farther. Eventual dimensions depend on growing conditions and pruning; the source's 2–3-foot height claim is not used as a guaranteed mature size.
Optional decorative planters
For a tabletop display, consider our White BASEL, Black BASEL, White OSLO, or Black OSLO planters. Decorative planters and additional hanging accessories are sold separately. Each planter has a 6.3-inch opening, but hanging-pot rims and hanger attachments vary, so check the actual nursery pot's widest diameter and height for fit; the hanger may need to be detached for tabletop styling. BASEL and OSLO have no drainage holes and should be used as removable cover pots, not for direct planting.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright to moderate indirect light. Filter strong direct sunlight to protect the patterned foliage. Avoid a dark corner, which can weaken growth.
- Water: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, not soggy. Water when the surface begins to dry, then drain thoroughly. Avoid repeatedly drying the entire root ball or leaving the nursery pot standing in water. Adjust frequency as conditions change rather than following a fixed calendar.
- Water quality: Low-mineral water can help if leaf edges repeatedly brown despite appropriate moisture and humidity. Review fertilizer buildup and dry air rather than assuming every brown edge requires more water.
- Soil: Use a moisture-retentive but well-draining houseplant mix and a nursery pot with drainage holes. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately. Avoid compacted, waterlogged soil.
- Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed lightly with a slow-release fertilizer. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Follow its label, avoid overfeeding, and do not fertilize a dry or stressed root ball. Skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
- Temperature: Keep in a warm indoor space away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature swings. Protect from frost.
- Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps maintain leaf quality. Use a humidifier in dry rooms rather than relying on misting for lasting humidity. Maintain gentle airflow and avoid constantly wet foliage.
- Display and maintenance: Use a secure hanger rated for the watered container's weight, or a stable tabletop with room for spreading stems. Remove fully yellowed leaves with clean tools and handle foliage gently. Repot when roots crowd the container, using fresh mix and a modestly larger pot with drainage.
- Cover-pot watering: Lift the nursery pot out of any BASEL or OSLO planter before watering. Let it drain fully, empty collected water, and return it only after drainage stops.
Pet safety: Maranta is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
