Rat Tail Cactus (Aporocactus flagelliformis) is loved for its long, slim, ribbed green stems that spill in a graceful cascade from a hanging basket. Fine bristles line the stems, and mature plants may produce large, vivid red flowers. Give it a bright spot where its trailing form can hang freely and become a living focal point.
Size & what you’ll receive
- Ships as a live plant in a 6-inch hanging pot.
- Trailing stems can extend several feet as the plant matures; length varies with age and growing conditions.
- The terracotta hanging planter shown in one styled photo is a prop and is not included. The plant ships in its simple hanging pot.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright light with some gentle direct sun if available. Protect it from harsh midday sun, which can scorch the stems.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the soil has dried, then let excess drain away. Check more often in warm weather or brighter light, and reduce watering in cooler, darker conditions.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix in a pot with drainage.
- Temperature & humidity: Keep it warm and protect it from frost. Good air movement and typical indoor humidity are suitable.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a cactus fertilizer, following the label directions.
- Pruning: Trim overly long or damaged stems with clean snips if needed; handle the fine bristles carefully.
- Repotting: Repot when the plant becomes rootbound, using a container with drainage and fresh fast-draining mix.
- Propagation: Stem cuttings can be allowed to dry and callus before placing them in dry, gritty mix.
Pet safety
Toxicity information for this cactus is not confirmed. Its fine bristles can cause injury, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.
