Rabbit’s Foot Fern, 4-Inch Nursery Pot
The Rabbit’s Foot Fern brings fine, lacy green fronds and its most distinctive feature: soft, fuzzy rhizomes that creep across the soil and over the pot edge. Set this small fern on a bright shelf where those ‘feet’ can be seen. Each living plant varies in frond shape and fullness.
Size and what ships
One live Rabbit’s Foot Fern in a 4-inch nursery pot, not the decorative planter shown in styled photographs. Height and frond spread at shipment vary. With time and good care its rhizomes can spread beyond this starter pot; larger, mature plants are not what ships.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect light or gentle morning sun; shield from harsh direct afternoon sun.
- Water: Water when the top of the potting mix begins to dry, letting excess run out. Keep lightly and evenly moist during active growth, never waterlogged; adjust to the season rather than following a fixed schedule.
- Soil: Use an airy, moisture-retentive yet draining fern mix in a pot with drainage. Keep the fuzzy rhizomes at or above the soil surface rather than burying them.
- Humidity and temperature: Moderate to higher indoor humidity helps prevent crisp frond edges. A humidifier or grouping plants can help in dry rooms; daily misting and an exact humidity percentage are not required. Avoid hot, dry vents and freezing drafts.
- Feeding: In spring and summer, feed lightly with diluted balanced houseplant fertilizer about monthly if actively growing; pause or reduce during slower winter growth.
- Pruning: Snip off fully brown fronds at the base. Leave healthy fuzzy rhizomes intact.
- Repotting: When roots fill the pot or rhizomes need room, move to a slightly wider draining pot without burying the rhizomes.
- Propagation: Established rhizomes can be divided into sections with roots and fronds and set on moist mix.
Pet safety
Rabbit’s Foot Fern is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though chewing any plant may upset a pet’s stomach.
Optional decorative planter
The white Basel 4.7-inch planter is sold separately. Measure the nursery pot’s outside width before ordering to confirm fit, and allow the fuzzy rhizomes to drape naturally. Basel has no drainage hole: lift out the nursery pot to water, let it drain, then return it. Styled furnishings are not included.
