Neoregelia ‘Medusa’ Bromeliad, 6-Inch Pot
Neoregelia ‘Medusa’ creates a dramatic indoor display with long, arching green leaves and red-toned central foliage. Its broad rosette spreads outward in a star-like arrangement, bringing bold color and movement to a bright room. The intensity of the red coloration varies with light, maturity, season, and growing conditions.
Points of interest
- Long, arching leaves arranged in a broad rosette.
- Central foliage can develop striking red tones.
- A central cup formed by overlapping leaves.
- Offsets, or pups, may develop around a mature rosette.
Current and mature size
You receive one rooted bromeliad in a 6-inch plastic nursery pot. The source describes representative plants approximately 12–16 inches across; individual spread, height, and color vary. Give the arching foliage room to extend beyond the pot. Mature size depends on growing conditions, and offsets can broaden the display over time. Bright red center color is not guaranteed at shipping.
Optional decorative planters
Consider our White BASEL, Black BASEL, White OSLO, or Black OSLO planters for an indoor display. Decorative planters are sold separately; the bromeliad ships in its nursery pot. Each planter has a 6.3-inch opening, but nursery-pot rims and shapes vary, so check the actual pot's widest diameter and height for fit. BASEL and OSLO have no drainage holes and should be used as removable cover pots, not for direct planting.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Introduce stronger light gradually, and protect from harsh direct sun that can scorch leaves. Light influences foliage color, but do not stress the plant to force red coloration.
- Water: In warm, well-lit conditions, keep a small amount of fresh, low-mineral water in the central cup. Flush and replace it regularly to prevent stagnant water and debris buildup. In cool conditions, avoid leaving a cold, stagnant cup. Water the potting mix separately when its upper layer begins to dry and drain thoroughly. The roots should not remain waterlogged; never leave the nursery pot standing in collected water.
- Soil: Use a loose, airy, fast-draining bromeliad mix in a nursery pot with drainage holes. Our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately, can be a base when amended with suitable bark or perlite for additional aeration; do not pack it densely or keep it saturated.
- Feeding: Bromeliads need little fertilizer, and excessive feeding can weaken foliage color. If feeding during active growth, use a product labeled as suitable for bromeliads at its recommended light rate. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately; use only if its label permits this application. Keep fertilizer out of the central cup, avoid overfeeding, and skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
- Temperature and humidity: Keep in a warm indoor space away from cold drafts and frost. Moderate to higher humidity is helpful; use a humidifier in dry rooms when needed and maintain gentle airflow.
- Maintenance: Remove debris from the cup and trim fully dried foliage with clean tools. Handle leaf edges carefully. A mature rosette may decline after flowering while pups continue growing; do not confuse this normal life cycle with a need for extra watering. Allow offsets to develop roots and substantial size before separating.
- Cover-pot watering: Lift the nursery pot out of any BASEL or OSLO planter before watering the mix or flushing the cup. Let excess water drain fully, empty the decorative planter, and return the nursery pot only after drainage stops.
Pet safety: Neoregelia is generally considered non-toxic to pets; leaf edges can be scratchy, so discourage chewing.
