Maidenhair fern (Adiantum raddianum) carries tiny fan-shaped green leaflets on fine dark stems, creating an airy, lace-like silhouette. Its delicate look rewards a consistent watering routine and a spot away from dry drafts. Each live plant varies in fullness and frond length.

Points of interest and size

  • One live maidenhair fern in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • A young fern when shipped. With time and suitable conditions, it can grow into a fuller clump about 1–2 feet tall and wide indoors; size depends on care and space.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright filtered to medium indirect light. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaflets.
  • Water: Check the mix often, especially in a small pot. Keep it consistently lightly moist but never soggy; water when the surface is just beginning to dry, drain excess, and do not let the root ball dry completely.
  • Soil: Use an airy, moisture-retentive fern or houseplant mix in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Moderate to high humidity helps prevent crisp fronds. A humidifier or a naturally humid, bright room is more dependable than misting alone. Keep away from hot dry vents and cold drafts; no exact 80% humidity target is required.
  • Feeding: During spring and summer growth, apply balanced houseplant fertilizer sparingly, diluted according to its label; reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Trim fully brown fronds close to the base with clean scissors. If it dries out and fronds brown, restore consistent moisture and watch for new growth.
  • Repotting: When roots crowd the pot, move up one size in fresh airy mix, without burying the crown deeper.
  • Propagation: Established clumps may be divided carefully during repotting; spores are a slower, more advanced method.

Pet safety

Maidenhair ferns are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep fronds out of reach of pets that chew plants.
