Kangaroo Paw Fern (Microsorum diversifolium) adds lush texture with glossy green fronds that vary from simple shapes to distinctive, irregular lobes. Arching growth gives it a relaxed, spreading silhouette that suits a bright shelf or tabletop where its fronds have room to drape.

Points of interest

  • Variable frond shapes, including lobed leaves resembling a kangaroo's paw.
  • Arching green foliage and creeping rhizomes create a spreading clump.
  • An epiphytic fern that benefits from airy growing medium and gentle moisture.
  • Frond size, shape, and fullness vary with maturity and growing conditions.

Current and mature size

You receive one rooted fern in a 4-inch plastic nursery pot. Photos show representative plants; height, spread, and frond count vary. A mature plant can form a clump approximately 1 foot tall and 2–3 feet across in suitable conditions, though container growth and pruning affect its eventual size.

Decorative pots and accessories shown in styled photos are not included and are sold separately.

Optional BASEL planters

Explore the White BASEL 4.7-Inch Planter or Black BASEL 4.7-Inch Planter, each sold separately. Measure your nursery pot's actual outside width against the 4.7-inch opening to confirm fit. These planters have no drainage holes. For cover-pot use, remove the nursery pot for watering and let it drain completely before returning it. Do not leave standing water inside the decorative planter.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect or filtered light. Protect from harsh midday sun; gentle morning light may be tolerated after gradual acclimation. Very low light can slow growth.
  • Water: Keep the root zone lightly and evenly moist, not saturated. Water when the surface begins to dry, then drain thoroughly. Avoid prolonged complete drying and never leave the nursery pot standing in water. Adjust watering to temperature, light, and season.
  • Soil: Use an airy, well-draining houseplant mix that retains some moisture. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately. Maintain aeration and avoid burying creeping rhizomes deeply when repotting.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Follow its label and use a conservative amount for this fern; avoid overfeeding and skip feeding while growth is paused or the plant is stressed by extreme heat or cold.
  • Temperature and humidity: Provide warm, stable indoor conditions with moderate to higher humidity. Keep away from cold drafts and drying vents. A humidifier can help in dry rooms; occasional misting does not replace consistent humidity. Maintain airflow without a strong drying draft.
  • Maintenance: Remove fully dried fronds with clean scissors. Brown dots on the undersides of mature fronds may be natural spore structures rather than pests. Repot when the plant outgrows its container, using a modestly larger pot with drainage.

Pet safety: Kangaroo Paw Fern is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
