Jumbo Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera adansonii) brings distinctive, naturally perforated leaves and generous vining growth to a bright indoor space. Let its stems trail from the hanging pot or provide a support for upward growth. This larger specimen offers a more established display than a small starter plant, while retaining the relaxed, leafy character that makes adansonii a favorite.

Points of interest

  • Green leaves develop the characteristic openings that inspire the Swiss Cheese name.
  • Vining stems can trail or climb when supported.
  • Ships in an 8-inch hanging nursery pot, distinct from our smaller 4-inch listing.
  • Leaf size and the number of openings vary with maturity and growing conditions.
  • Botanically Monstera adansonii, although the original listing used the name Philodendron adansonii.

What ships and estimated mature size

You will receive one live jumbo Swiss Cheese Plant in an 8-inch hanging nursery pot, with an approximate overall plant size of 2 feet. Measurements, trailing length, fullness, and leaf coverage vary naturally; 2 feet is an estimate, not a guaranteed exact dimension. Decorative planters, stands, moss poles, and display accessories are not included and are sold separately.

Vines can grow beyond 3 feet indoors over time, with eventual length determined by light, support, pruning, and care. Supported growth may develop larger leaves than freely trailing growth. Mature dimensions are estimates, not shipping measurements.

Optional planter or display pairing

Keep the plant in its hanging nursery pot or choose a stable display that supports its weight. For a decorative cover pot, choose an opening large enough for the actual 8-inch nursery pot and retain drainage by removing the nursery pot for watering and emptying collected water.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light near a sunny window, protected from harsh direct afternoon sun. Gentle morning sun may be tolerated after gradual acclimation. Low light can lead to stretched stems and slower growth.
  • Watering: Water when the upper portion of the mix has dried, checking below the surface rather than using a fixed schedule. Water thoroughly and drain fully. Keep the root zone lightly moist during active growth without leaving it saturated, and reduce frequency in cooler or lower-light conditions.
  • Soil: Use an airy, freely draining medium such as our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately. Maintain drainage and avoid compacted, persistently wet soil.
  • Humidity: Moderate to elevated humidity supports healthy foliage. Use a humidifier if indoor air is very dry, while maintaining airflow. Routine leaf misting is not a substitute for consistent humidity.
  • Temperature: Favor warm indoor conditions around 65–80°F. Protect from cold drafts, frost, and sudden temperature changes. Outdoor summer placement should be sheltered and shaded, with gradual acclimation.
  • Feeding: During active growth, use our Slow-Release Fertilizer, sold separately, following its directions for the container size. Do not combine it with additional routine fertilizer, and reduce or pause feeding when growth slows.
  • Support: Allow vines to trail freely or secure them gently to a moss pole or trellis. Do not tighten ties around stems. Aerial roots are normal and can help attach the plant to a support.
  • Pruning: Trim overlong stems above a node with clean tools to encourage a manageable shape. Remove yellow or damaged leaves as needed. Do not remove healthy leaves solely because their openings differ.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots crowd the container or watering becomes difficult to manage, choosing a draining pot only one size larger. Avoid excessive pot size, which can keep the mix wet too long.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings need at least one node; a leaf alone will not produce a new vine. Root suitable cuttings in water or an airy medium, then pot once roots are established.
  • Routine checks: Inspect leaf undersides and new growth for pests, and gently clean dusty foliage. Yellowing can have several causes, so check soil moisture, drainage, and light before changing care.

Pet safety: Not pet-safe. Monstera contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth if chewed. Keep foliage and cuttings away from pets and children.
