Japanese bird’s nest fern ‘Crissie’ (Asplenium antiquum) unfurls glossy green, rippled fronds from a central rosette. Its textured foliage gives a softly sculptural look to a shelf or shaded tabletop. Each plant’s fullness and frond shape vary naturally.

Points of interest and size

  • One live ‘Crissie’ fern in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • A young fern when shipped. With time and suitable conditions, mature plants can form a broad rosette roughly 1–3 feet across; indoor size varies with space and care.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright filtered to medium indirect light. Avoid intense direct sun that can scorch fronds.
  • Water: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, not soggy. Water the soil around the edge of the pot as the surface begins to dry, allowing excess to drain; avoid pouring water into the central crown.
  • Soil: Use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining fern or houseplant mix with perlite in a pot with drainage.
  • Humidity and temperature: Moderate to higher humidity helps prevent dry brown tips. A humidifier or naturally humid room can help; avoid cold drafts and drying vents. Daily misting and an exact humidity percentage are not required.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly during active spring and summer growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label; reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Remove fully brown or damaged fronds near the base with clean scissors, without cutting the central growing point.
  • Repotting: When roots crowd the pot, move up one size in fresh airy mix. Keep the crown above the soil line.
  • Propagation: Bird’s nest ferns grow from spores rather than simple stem cuttings; this is a slow, more advanced method.

Pet safety

Bird’s nest ferns are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep fronds out of reach of pets that chew plants.
