Gold Child English ivy (Hedera helix ‘Gold Child’) pairs small lobed green leaves with creamy gold margins. Let the vines soften the edge of a shelf or guide them up a support; variegation and vine length vary from plant to plant.
Points of interest and size
- One live Gold Child ivy in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
- A young plant when shipped. Its vines can grow several feet long indoors over time with suitable care; trim to maintain your preferred shape and length.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect light maintains stronger variegation. Avoid scorching afternoon sun; very low light may dull the gold margins.
- Water: Water when the upper inch of soil feels dry, then drain thoroughly. Avoid both prolonged sogginess and letting the entire root ball dry out.
- Soil: Use an airy, well-draining houseplant mix in a pot with drainage holes.
- Humidity and temperature: Ivy appreciates moderate humidity and cooler indoor conditions. Keep away from hot dry vents; check leaf undersides for spider mites if the air is very dry.
- Feeding: During spring and summer growth, feed about monthly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label; reduce or pause in winter.
- Pruning: Trim vines just above a leaf node to promote fuller branching and remove damaged leaves with clean shears.
- Repotting: When roots crowd the pot, move up one size in fresh draining mix, maintaining the original planting depth.
- Propagation: Root stem cuttings with nodes in water or lightly moist soil under bright indirect light.
Pet safety
Keep English ivy away from cats, dogs, and children: its leaves and berries can be harmful if eaten.
