Points of interest
- Large, thick, waxy green leaves with an elongated to oval shape and visible veining
- New growth can emerge with reddish or bronze tones before maturing to green
- Produces fragrant, star-shaped flowers in rounded clusters when mature and grown in favorable conditions
- Slow to moderate growth with long, trailing or climbing vines
- A rewarding choice for Hoya collectors and newer houseplant owners
Size and growth
This plant is supplied in a 6-inch hanging pot. The fullness, leaf count, and vine length of each plant will vary. Indoors, established vines can typically reach approximately 3–6 feet or longer over time. Growth rate and mature size depend on light, warmth, nutrition, and growing conditions. The thick leaves are generally elongated to oval and may reach several inches long as the plant matures.
Hoya rigida care
- Light: Provide bright, indirect or filtered light. Gentle morning sun can encourage strong growth and flowering, but harsh afternoon sun may scorch the leaves. The plant can tolerate medium light, although growth and blooming may slow.
- Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry before watering again. Empty excess water and never leave the roots sitting in soggy soil. Water less often during cooler or lower-light months.
- Soil: Use a loose, fast-draining mix. A blend formulated for epiphytes, or a houseplant mix amended with orchid bark and perlite or pumice, helps provide airflow around the roots.
- Temperature: Best grown at approximately 65–85°F. Protect it from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 55–60°F.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is usually suitable, but moderate humidity around 40–60% supports healthy growth. Good airflow is important, especially in humid spaces.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a month during active spring and summer growth. Reduce or stop feeding during winter when growth slows. Avoid fertilizing dry soil.
- Pruning: Trim excessively long, bare, or damaged vines with clean shears. Avoid removing old flower spurs, also called peduncles, because Hoyas can bloom again from them.
- Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node and root it in water, damp sphagnum moss, perlite, or an airy potting mix. Keep the cutting warm in bright, indirect light until roots develop.
Pet safety
Hoyas are generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Even non-toxic plants can cause mild stomach upset if chewed or eaten, so keep this plant away from pets that like to nibble and contact a veterinarian if you have concerns.
What you will receive
You will receive one live Hoya rigida in a 6-inch hanging pot. Product photos represent the variety and general quality, but the exact plant shipped may differ. Natural variations in shape, color, vine length, leaf markings, and clustering are normal for living plants. Minor cosmetic blemishes or leaf loss can occur during handling and shipping and do not affect the plant’s long-term health. Flowers are not guaranteed, and bloom timing depends on plant maturity and growing conditions.
Optional decorative planters
The Basel and Oslo planters shown in styled photos are not included with this Hoya and are sold separately. If you would like to style its 6-inch grow pot in a decorative planter, explore white Basel, black Basel, white Oslo, or black Oslo. Each has a 6.3-inch opening; check the hanging pot's dimensions and remove its hanger if needed before placing it inside.
