Hoya carnosa (Wax Plant), 4-Inch Pot
Set a Hoya carnosa on a bright shelf and enjoy its thick, waxy, glossy green leaves as the vines gradually lengthen. Let them trail or guide them around a small support. With maturity and favorable light, this wax plant can produce clusters of small, star-shaped, fragrant flowers.
Points of interest and size
- One live Hoya carnosa in a 4-inch nursery grow pot; current leaf shape, fullness and vine length vary naturally.
- Estimated mature indoor vine length: about 3–6 feet with time and suitable care; prune to keep it shorter.
- Thick, fleshy green foliage offers an attractive display between flowering cycles.
Care guide
- Light: Give bright indirect light; gentle morning sun can help mature plants flower, but avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun.
- Water: Let much of the potting mix dry between thorough waterings, then allow excess to drain. Water less often in cooler or darker months and avoid constantly wet roots.
- Soil: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining mix with fine bark and perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
- Humidity and temperature: Average household humidity is usually suitable, with moderate humidity helpful for new growth. Keep warm and away from cold drafts.
- Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, use balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label about once a month; reduce or pause in winter.
- Pruning: Trim an overlong vine just above a node to shape the plant. Leave short flower spurs intact because Hoya can rebloom from them; guide vines to trail or climb.
- Repotting: Check roots every 2–3 years. Hoyas can flower while somewhat snug in their pots, so move up only one size if crowded or if the mix has broken down.
- Propagation: Root a healthy stem cutting with at least one node in water or lightly moist, airy propagation mix in warm indirect light, then pot once roots are established.
Pet safety
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. This ornamental plant is not intended for eating; keep it out of reach of small children.
