Give a bright shelf a little color with Hoya australis ‘Lisa.’ Its thick, waxy oval leaves show variegated green and cream, while fresh growth can emerge with pink or rosy tones before maturing. Train its vines around a support or let them trail as they lengthen. Under favorable conditions, a mature plant can produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers.

Points of interest and size

  • One live young Hoya australis ‘Lisa’ in a 4-inch nursery grow pot; current leaf colors, fullness and vine length vary naturally.
  • Estimated mature indoor vine length: about 3–6 feet with time and suitable care; prune to manage its size.
  • Green-and-cream variegation differs from leaf to leaf, with rosy new growth possible.

Care guide

  • Light: Give bright indirect light to support variegation; gentle morning sun may suit an acclimated plant. Avoid harsh afternoon sun that can scorch pale leaf areas.
  • Water: Let much of the potting mix dry between thorough waterings, then drain fully. Avoid keeping roots wet, and reduce watering during cooler or dimmer months.
  • Soil: Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining mix with fine bark and perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average household humidity is often suitable; moderate humidity can help new growth. Keep warm and away from cold drafts.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, use balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label about monthly. Reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Trim vines just above a node to manage length, but leave short flower spurs intact because Hoya can rebloom from them. Guide vines to trail or climb.
  • Repotting: Check roots every 2–3 years. If crowded or the mix has broken down, move up only one pot size in fresh airy mix.
  • Propagation: Root a healthy stem cutting containing at least one node in water or lightly moist airy mix in warm indirect light, then pot when roots are established.
