Ginseng Ficus Bonsai (Ficus microcarpa), 4-Inch Pot
Ginseng Ficus (Ficus microcarpa) looks like a tiny tree, with glossy green leaves above a thick, sculptural exposed root base. Place it on a bright desk or shelf and trim new growth to maintain its compact bonsai-like outline. Root shape, canopy fullness, and leaf arrangement vary naturally.
Points of interest and size
- One live Ginseng Ficus in a 4-inch nursery grow pot with soil. This is the thick-rooted ficus form, not a braided Money Tree.
- A small tabletop plant when shipped. Without regular pruning and with suitable conditions, its canopy can grow much larger over time; prune to maintain a compact form. No exact mature indoor height is promised.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect light is ideal; gentle direct morning sun can suit an acclimated plant. Rotate periodically and avoid abrupt changes in light, which can trigger leaf drop.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of mix feel dry, then drain excess. Check soil rather than following a rigid schedule, and water less often in cooler, dimmer months.
- Soil: Use a free-draining bonsai or houseplant mix with added perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
- Humidity and temperature: Average to moderate indoor humidity is generally suitable. Keep warm and away from cold drafts, air-conditioning blasts, and hot vents.
- Feeding: In spring and summer, feed with balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label about monthly; reduce or pause in winter.
- Pruning: Trim elongated shoots just above leaves with clean shears to shape the canopy. Remove dead leaves; avoid cutting or burying the distinctive exposed root base.
- Repotting: When roots crowd the pot, refresh draining mix and move up one pot size if needed, keeping the root base at its original level.
- Propagation: Root healthy stem cuttings in warm, bright indirect conditions. A cutting will not immediately develop the mature swollen root form of the plant you receive.
Pet safety
Keep away from cats and dogs: chewing ficus can cause irritation or digestive upset, and its sap may irritate sensitive skin.
