Giant fishbone cactus (Selenicereus anthonyanus) is a tropical, epiphytic cactus with broad, deeply notched green stems that trace a dramatic zigzag. A bamboo stake supports its upright growth at shipment; over time, new stems can arch and trail, making it a striking shelf or hanging-basket plant.

Points of interest and size

  • One live plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot with bamboo stake, listed at approximately 12–18 inches tall when shipped. Height, stem count, and fullness vary.
  • With suitable care, stems can become much longer and trail; mature length is not the shipping size.
  • Mature plants may produce large, fragrant, night-opening flowers under favorable light and growing conditions. Large red flowers when in bloom.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect or filtered light is ideal. Gentle morning sun may suit an acclimated plant; shield from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of potting mix dry, then let excess drain. Reduce watering in cool, dim months; avoid leaving roots soggy or letting the mix stay bone-dry for long periods.
  • Soil: Use a loose, fast-draining epiphytic cactus mix with bark and perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average to moderate indoor humidity generally suits it better than desert-dry air. Keep warm, away from cold drafts and freezing conditions.
  • Feeding: In spring and summer, use balanced fertilizer diluted according to its label every 4–6 weeks; reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning and support: Remove damaged stems or trim long growth with clean shears. Guide stems gently on the included stake or allow future growth to trail; do not force stiff stems into a new shape.
  • Repotting: When roots crowd the pot or mix breaks down, move up one pot size in fresh airy mix without burying the stem base.
  • Propagation: Allow a healthy stem cutting to callus briefly, then root it in lightly moist, airy mix under warm, bright indirect conditions.
