Dragon Egg Succulent

Tylecodon schaeferianus, often called Dragon Egg, is a sculptural succulent with gnarled stems and plump, egg-shaped green leaves. The stems become knobbier and branch more with age, while bright sunlight can bring a soft pink blush to the foliage. It follows a seasonal cycle: the plant goes dormant and drops its leaves in summer, then may produce pink-to-white flowers in late summer.

Size & what you’ll receive

  • Ships as a live plant growing in a 4-inch nursery pot.
  • Its mature size varies with age and growing conditions; the stems become more branched and textured over time.
  • Terracotta pots shown in styled photos are props and are not included.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright light. Introduce direct sun gradually; stronger light can encourage pink tones.
  • Water: During active growth, water thoroughly after the soil dries, then let excess drain. Reduce watering sharply during summer dormancy after the plant drops its leaves; resume careful watering as new growth returns.
  • Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mix in a pot with drainage.
  • Temperature & humidity: Average indoor humidity is suitable. Protect it from frost and provide good air movement.
  • Feeding: If desired, use a diluted succulent fertilizer during active growth only, following the product label.
  • Pruning: Remove dry leaves or spent flower stems with clean snips; preserve the naturally gnarled stems.
  • Repotting: Repot only when needed, using a container with drainage and fresh gritty mix; the start of active growth is a good time.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings can be allowed to callus before placing them in dry, well-draining mix.

Pet safety

Dragon Egg is toxic to pets; keep it out of their reach.
