Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect or filtered light supports growth and leaf color. Lower light may slow growth. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun and acclimate gradually to changes in light.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of mix dry, then let excess drain. Avoid soggy roots and standing water. Reduce watering in cooler, darker months.
- Soil: Use a loose, well-draining houseplant mix with perlite in a pot with drainage holes. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately; add perlite as needed to maintain aeration and drainage.
- Temperature and humidity: Normal household humidity is generally suitable. Keep warm and away from cold drafts and hot, drying vents.
- Feeding: During active growth, use a balanced slow-release houseplant fertilizer according to its label directions. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Reduce or pause feeding during winter or inactivity and extreme heat or cold. Avoid feeding a stressed or newly repotted plant.
- Pruning: Remove fully yellowed leaves and trim brown tips with clean scissors. An established healthy cane can be cut back to manage height and encourage shoots; avoid removing most healthy foliage at once.
- Repotting: Check roots every 1–2 years. When crowded, move up one pot size into fresh draining mix, maintaining the original planting depth.
- Propagation: Established plants can be propagated from healthy stem or cane cuttings with a node in warm, lightly moist airy mix or clean water. A young plant may not yet have a suitable cutting; a leaf alone will not produce a new cane plant.
