Dracaena Kanzii brings an upright splash of pattern to a desk or shelf. Its long, narrow, gently arching leaves grow in a clustered rosette, with green blades and lighter yellow-green striping. Stripe placement, leaf count and fullness vary naturally from plant to plant.
Points of interest and size
- One live striped Dracaena Kanzii in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
- Compact tabletop plant when shipped; estimated mature indoor height: 3–6 feet.
Care guide
- Light: Bright indirect or filtered light helps maintain leaf color. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sun; growth can slow in dimmer spots.
- Water: Check the soil rather than watering on a fixed schedule. Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches feel dry, and let excess drain completely. Reduce frequency in cooler, darker months; do not leave the pot sitting in water.
- Soil: Use a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix in a container with drainage holes; a little perlite can improve aeration. Avoid dense, waterlogged soil.
- Humidity and temperature: Normal household humidity is usually suitable; avoid very dry blasts from heaters or AC. Keep in warm indoor conditions away from cold drafts.
- Feeding: In spring and summer, use a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label, about monthly while actively growing. Pause or reduce feeding in winter and avoid fertilizing a stressed or newly repotted plant.
- Pruning: Trim brown leaf tips or remove fully yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors. As it grows taller, a healthy cane can be cut back to manage height and encourage new shoots; avoid removing most foliage at once.
- Repotting: Check roots about every 1–2 years. If roots crowd the pot or circle densely, move up only one pot size into fresh draining mix in spring. Keep the original planting depth and water in, then allow the mix to approach its usual drying point before the next watering.
- Propagation: Established plants can be propagated from healthy stem or cane cuttings with at least one node. Root in clean water or moist, airy potting mix in warm bright indirect light; success and timing vary. A small plant may not yet have a suitable cane to cut.
