Tradescantia Silver Plus Houseplant, 4" Pot
Tradescantia ‘Silver Plus’ (Tradescantia zebrina) brings shimmering silver, green and purple foliage to an indoor shelf or hanging display. Its iridescent leaves catch the light, while fast-growing stems spill over the edge of a pot. This easy-growing houseplant rewards suitable light and regular trimming with a fuller, branching shape.
Points of interest
- Glittery silver markings contrast with green and purple tones.
- Bright light brings out the foliage's iridescence; protect leaves from harsh, unaccustomed direct sun.
- Fast-growing, trailing stems suit a hanging pot or basket, sold separately.
- Pinching stem tips encourages branching and helps keep growth compact.
What ships and estimated mature size
One live Tradescantia ‘Silver Plus’ grown in a 4-inch nursery pot. The 4-inch measurement refers to the pot diameter, not plant height. Stem length, fullness and leaf coloration vary naturally with the plant and growing conditions.
Typically forms a low mound approximately 6–12 inches tall, with trailing stems that may extend 12–24 inches or more under favorable conditions. These are estimates, not shipping dimensions; pruning and growing conditions affect size.
Optional planter pairing
Pair your plant with the white BASEL 4.7-inch planter or black BASEL 4.7-inch planter, sold separately. Check the grow pot’s dimensions against the planter’s interior fit. Keep the plant in its draining nursery pot, remove it for watering, and empty any collected water before returning it to the decorative planter.
Care guide
- Light: Give bright, indirect light for strong growth and attractive color. Gentle morning sun can suit an acclimated plant. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, and introduce increased light gradually. Long, sparse stems can indicate insufficient light.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top inch of potting mix feels dry, then let excess water drain away. Do not leave the pot in standing water. Water the mix rather than repeatedly wetting foliage, and reduce watering when growth slows.
- Soil and drainage: Use a loose, well-draining houseplant potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Empty any decorative cover pot or saucer after watering. Ready to repot? Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately.
- Temperature: Keep in comfortable indoor temperatures, approximately 60–80°F. Protect from frost, cold drafts and hot vents.
- Humidity: Average household humidity is usually suitable. Maintain airflow; persistent wet foliage is not a substitute for humidity.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth according to the fertilizer label. Avoid overfeeding or adding fertilizer to an already-fed mix. Reduce feeding when growth slows. Our Slow-Release Fertilizer is optional and sold separately.
- Pruning and renewal: Pinch or trim stem tips with clean scissors to encourage branching. Older stems may become bare near the base; healthy stem cuttings with nodes can be rooted to refresh the display. Remove dead leaves and avoid rough handling of brittle stems.
- Repotting and routine care: Repot into a slightly larger draining container when roots crowd the pot. Inspect regularly for common houseplant pests and allow time to acclimate after shipping. Rotate periodically for balanced growth.
Pet safety: Tradescantia can cause skin irritation and stomach upset if chewed. Keep away from pets and children, and wear gloves if the sap irritates your skin.
