Haworthia retusa is a compact succulent with fleshy, triangular green leaves arranged in low-growing rosettes. Its translucent leaf windows and fine pale lines catch the light, giving this small plant plenty of detail for a bright windowsill or desk near a window. With careful watering and filtered light, it makes an appealing addition to a small succulent collection.

Points of interest

  • Distinctive translucent leaf tips, often called windows, with delicate linear markings.
  • Slow-growing, space-saving rosettes that may gradually form a cluster of offsets.
  • Prefers bright filtered light rather than intense midday sun.
  • Established plants may produce slender flower stalks with small pale blooms; flowering is seasonal and not guaranteed.

What ships and estimated mature size

You will receive one live Haworthia retusa in a 4-inch nursery pot. Plants may have a single rosette or multiple offsets. Leaf color, markings, fullness and growth stage vary naturally; a flower stalk is not guaranteed. Pot size describes the container, not the plant's height. Decorative pots and accessories shown in styled photos are not included.

Estimated mature size: individual rosettes generally reach approximately 3–5 inches wide and remain about 2–4 inches tall, excluding flower stalks. Clusters can spread wider over time. Growth and final size depend on conditions.

Optional pot styling

A small terracotta pot with a drainage hole is a useful option when repotting. Choose a container only slightly wider than the root ball. Terracotta pots in styled photos are inspiration only and are not included with this plant; soil and fertilizer linked below are sold separately.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright indirect or filtered sunlight. Gentle morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation. Protect from harsh midday and afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Avoid dark corners.
  • Water: Let the potting mix dry completely before watering thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Never leave the pot standing in water, and avoid water collecting between the leaves. Adjust to the plant's growth and drying rate rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Water less when growth slows, especially in extreme heat or cool conditions.
  • Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent mix in a pot with drainage. Ready to repot? Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately.
  • Temperature and humidity: Typical indoor temperatures around 65–85°F work well. Protect from frost, cold drafts and prolonged extreme heat. Normal household humidity and gentle airflow are suitable; do not mist.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately; follow its label directions and avoid overfeeding. Skip feeding when growth is paused, during extreme heat or cold, or while roots are stressed.
  • Pruning: No shaping is needed. Gently remove fully dried lower leaves and trim spent flower stalks with clean tools.
  • Repotting: Repot when the roots or offsets crowd the container, usually every few years rather than annually. Use a slightly larger pot with drainage, keep the crown above the mix, and allow damaged roots to heal before watering.
  • Propagation: Separate established offsets that have their own roots. Allow any cut surfaces to dry before potting in fresh succulent mix, then water cautiously while the plant establishes.

Pet safety: Haworthia is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but this plant is not intended for eating. Keep out of reach of pets and young children, as chewing any plant can cause stomach upset.
