Bring delicate pattern to a bright indoor shelf with variegated Ficus triangularis. Small, distinctly triangular leaves have green centers and creamy margins, with the balance of colors varying leaf to leaf. It starts as a compact tabletop plant and can develop a branching, tree-like shape as it grows.

Points of interest and size

  • One live variegated Ficus triangularis in a 4-inch nursery grow pot; current height, leaf pattern and fullness vary.
  • Estimated mature indoor height: about 3–6 feet over time under suitable conditions; pruning can maintain a smaller shape.
  • Bright variegated leaves make a fine-textured contrast with larger-leaved houseplants.

Care guide

  • Light: Give bright indirect or filtered light to support variegation. Gentle morning sun can be suitable, but avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun.
  • Water: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry before watering thoroughly, then let excess drain. Avoid soggy roots and reduce frequency when growth slows.
  • Soil: Use a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix with perlite or fine bark in a container with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Moderate household humidity is suitable. Keep warm and away from cold drafts and drying vents; sudden changes of location can cause leaf drop.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, apply balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label about monthly. Pause or reduce in winter.
  • Pruning: Trim stems just above a leaf node to shape the plant and encourage branching; remove dead or damaged leaves with clean scissors. Avoid getting milky sap on skin.
  • Repotting: Check roots every 1–2 years and move up one pot size when crowded, using fresh draining mix and maintaining the prior planting depth.
  • Propagation: In warm months, root a healthy stem tip cutting with several leaves and nodes in lightly moist propagation mix in bright indirect light and higher humidity. Allow roots to establish before potting.
