Care guide
- Light: Provide bright light with some gentle filtered sun for leaf coloration. Acclimate gradually to direct sun and avoid sudden exposure to harsh afternoon rays. Low light can reduce color.
- Water: Keep the root ball lightly and evenly moist, allowing the upper layer of mix to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and let excess drain. Avoid soggy roots, standing water and prolonged complete drying. Adjust frequency in cooler or darker conditions.
- Soil: Use well-draining organic houseplant mix with perlite or fine bark for aeration. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately; amend as needed to keep the mix airy. Use a nursery pot with drainage holes.
- Temperature and humidity: Aim for 65–80°F and higher humidity where practical. Avoid cold drafts, air-conditioning blasts and drying heating vents. Sudden environmental changes may cause leaf drop; keep conditions consistent.
- Feeding: During active growth, follow fertilizer label directions. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Reduce or pause feeding during inactivity and extreme heat or cold. Avoid feeding stressed or newly repotted plants.
- Pruning: Remove damaged leaves and trim an established plant to shape with clean tools. Wear gloves when handling cut stems because the milky sap can irritate skin; keep sap away from eyes.
- Repotting: Check roots every 1–2 years and move up one pot size when crowded, preferably during active growth. Keep the original planting depth and avoid unnecessary root disturbance.
- Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings with a node can be rooted in warm, lightly moist airy medium with suitable humidity. A leaf alone will not produce a complete new plant. Wear gloves and avoid taking excessive cuttings from a young plant.
