Crocodile Fern (Microsorum musifolium) brings bold texture to a bright indoor space with long green fronds patterned by a distinctive network of veins. The raised, scale-like surface gives this fern its common name, while upright and arching fronds create a lush, spreading display.

Points of interest

  • Strap-shaped green fronds with an eye-catching crocodile-skin pattern.
  • Upright new growth and arching older fronds add dimension.
  • An epiphytic fern that benefits from airy growing medium, gentle moisture, and good airflow.
  • Frond size, texture, and fullness vary with maturity and growing conditions.

Current and mature size

You receive one rooted fern in a 6-inch plastic nursery pot. Photos show representative plants; height, spread, and frond count vary. A mature plant can reach approximately 2–3 feet tall with a broad spread in suitable conditions. Container size, care, and growing space influence its eventual size.

Decorative pots and accessories shown in styled photos are not included and are sold separately.

Optional decorative planters

Explore the White BASEL 6-Inch Planter, Black BASEL 6-Inch Planter, White OSLO 6-Inch Planter, and Black OSLO 6-Inch Planter, each sold separately. All have 6.3-inch openings; measure your nursery pot's actual outside width to confirm fit. These planters have no drainage holes. For cover-pot use, remove the nursery pot for watering and let it drain fully before returning it. Do not leave standing water inside the decorative planter.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect or filtered light. Protect from harsh midday sun; gentle morning light may be tolerated after gradual acclimation. Very low light can slow growth.
  • Water: Keep the root zone lightly and evenly moist, not saturated. Water when the surface begins to dry, then drain thoroughly. Avoid prolonged complete drying or standing water. Adjust watering to light, temperature, and season.
  • Soil: Use an airy, well-draining houseplant mix that retains some moisture. Shop our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately. Maintain root aeration and avoid burying the fern's crown or rhizomes deeply.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Follow its label and use a conservative amount for this fern. Avoid overfeeding and skip feeding while growth is paused or the plant is stressed by extreme heat or cold.
  • Temperature and humidity: Provide warm, stable indoor conditions with moderate to higher humidity. Protect from cold drafts and drying vents. A humidifier can help in dry rooms; occasional misting does not replace consistent humidity. Maintain airflow without a strong drying draft.
  • Maintenance: Remove fully dried fronds with clean scissors. Brown spore structures may develop on the undersides of mature fronds and are not automatically a sign of pests. Repot when the plant outgrows its container, choosing a modestly larger pot with drainage.

Pet safety: Crocodile Fern is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
