Chain Plant (Tradescantia navicularis) packs texture into a small space. Its small, fleshy, boat-shaped leaves overlap along compact stems like links in a chain, showing green with purple tones that can deepen in brighter light. As stems lengthen, they may spread and trail over the edge of a shelf.

Points of interest and size

  • One live Chain Plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot; current color, stem length and fullness vary naturally.
  • Estimated mature indoor spread or trailing length: about 12–24 inches with time and suitable care; trim to keep it compact.
  • Layered green-purple leaves create a dense, geometric texture up close.

Care guide

  • Light: Give bright indirect light or gentle morning sun, acclimating gradually to any direct light. Lower light can make stems stretch and mute the purple tones; protect from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Water: Allow most of the mix to dry before watering thoroughly, then drain excess. Its fleshy leaves tolerate short dry spells better than waterlogged roots; water less in winter.
  • Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent or indoor mix with extra perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average household humidity is suitable. Keep warm and away from cold drafts.
  • Feeding: During spring and summer growth, feed lightly with balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label every 6–8 weeks. Pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Pinch or trim long stems just above a node to maintain a fuller shape; remove damaged growth with clean scissors.
  • Repotting: Check roots every 1–2 years and move up one pot size only if crowded, using fresh fast-draining mix.
  • Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with nodes, let the cut end dry briefly, then root in lightly moist, fast-draining mix in bright indirect light. Avoid keeping the cutting soggy.

Pet safety

Keep away from pets and children. Tradescantia can irritate skin or mouths.
