Burle Marx Prayer Plant brings intricate foliage to a bright indoor room, with pale green leaves marked by dark green fishbone patterns and contrasting burgundy undersides. Its leafy, spreading form adds texture to a table or plant stand. This listing retains the supplied Burle Marx trade name; plants sold under this name are often classified as Ctenanthe rather than Calathea.

Points of interest

  • Light green leaf surfaces with bold, dark fishbone markings.
  • Burgundy-toned undersides provide contrast as leaves change position.
  • Prayer-plant relatives naturally adjust leaf positions through the day and night.
  • Best suited to consistent moisture, humid air, and gentle indirect light.

Current and estimated mature size

You receive one rooted plant in a 6-inch nursery pot. The source listing estimates current plants at 18–24 inches tall; height, spread, and fullness vary naturally. Photos are representative. The source estimates mature growth at approximately 2–3 feet, but the precise botanical identity has not been confirmed and eventual size depends on the plant, container, and growing conditions. These are estimates, not size guarantees.

Optional decorative planters

Consider our White BASEL, Black BASEL, White OSLO, or Black OSLO. Decorative planters are sold separately; the plant ships in its nursery pot. Each has a 6.3-inch opening. Check the actual nursery pot's outside rim diameter and height before choosing a cover pot. BASEL and OSLO have no drainage holes; retain a removable inner pot with drainage rather than planting directly into them.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright to moderate indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch or fade leaves, and very dim locations.
  • Water: Keep the mix consistently lightly moist, not soggy. Water when the surface begins to dry, then drain thoroughly. Avoid letting the entire root ball dry out. Check soil conditions rather than using a fixed calendar. If tap water contributes to brown edges, consider rainwater, distilled water, or appropriately filtered water.
  • Soil: Use a moisture-retentive yet airy houseplant mix in a pot with drainage holes. Our Rich Houseplant Soil Blend, sold separately, can be amended with perlite or bark as needed for aeration. Avoid compacted soil and standing water.
  • Temperature: Maintain warm, stable conditions, approximately 65–80°F. Protect from frost, prolonged temperatures below 60°F, cold drafts, and hot dry vents.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity is helpful. Use a humidifier if indoor air is dry, with gentle airflow. Misting alone does not provide lasting humidity.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately. Follow the label, avoid combining fertilizer schedules, and pause feeding during slow growth or plant stress.
  • Maintenance: Remove damaged leaves at the base with clean tools and gently wipe dust from foliage. Inspect undersides for pests. Curling or brown edges can have several causes, including dry soil, dry air, excess salts, or temperature stress; check conditions before changing care.
  • Repotting: Repot when crowded roots warrant it into a modestly larger draining pot during active growth. Avoid unnecessary disturbance immediately after shipping.
  • Cover-pot watering: Remove the nursery pot from BASEL or OSLO before watering. Let it drain fully, empty collected water, and return it only after drainage stops.

Pet safety: Ctenanthe and Calathea prayer plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
