Bring a fresh green focal point to a shelf or bright bathroom with Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus). Broad, strap-shaped, gently rippled bright-green fronds unfurl from a central rosette, creating a sculptural nest-like shape. New fronds emerge from the center as the fern grows.

Points of interest and size

  • One live Bird’s Nest Fern in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • Estimated mature indoor size: about 2–3 feet tall and wide under suitable conditions.
  • Frond shape, height and fullness vary naturally.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect or filtered light suits its fronds. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: Keep the potting mix lightly and evenly moist, not waterlogged. Water the soil around the rosette as the upper layer starts to dry; avoid pouring water into the central crown, and let excess drain away. Reduce frequency in cooler, dimmer months.
  • Soil: Use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining fern or indoor potting mix with perlite or fine bark in a container with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Moderate to higher humidity helps fronds stay lush. A bright bathroom may work well; keep warm and away from cold drafts and drying vents.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, apply a balanced houseplant fertilizer at a weak dilution according to its label every 6–8 weeks. Avoid overfeeding and pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Trim fully brown or damaged fronds at the base with clean scissors. Avoid cutting into the central growing crown; new fronds arise there.
  • Repotting: Check roots every 1–2 years. If crowded, move up one pot size in spring with fresh draining mix, keeping the crown above the soil surface rather than burying it.
  • Propagation: Bird’s Nest Fern does not usually divide into offsets or root from leaf cuttings. It reproduces by spores on mature fronds, a slow process best left to experienced growers.
