Give a bright shelf a bold botanical accent with Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa). Broad, glossy, pointed oval leaves carry striking cream-white veins against deep green, creating the striped look behind its name. Under favorable conditions, yellow flower bracts may appear above the foliage in spring and summer.

Points of interest and size

  • One live Zebra Plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • Estimated mature indoor size: approximately 1–2 feet tall and wide.
  • Leaf markings, size and fullness vary naturally; blooms are not guaranteed at delivery.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect or filtered light suits its patterned leaves. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun and very dim spots.
  • Water: Check regularly and water when the soil surface begins to dry, allowing excess to drain completely. Keep the mix lightly moist during active growth rather than soggy or repeatedly bone dry; reduce frequency in cooler, darker months.
  • Soil: Use a rich but well-draining indoor potting mix with perlite for aeration, in a container with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Moderate to high humidity supports healthy foliage. Keep warm, ideally around 65–80°F, away from cold drafts and drying heating vents.
  • Feeding: During spring and summer growth, use a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label every 4–6 weeks. Reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Remove yellow or damaged leaves and spent flower bracts with clean scissors. Pinch or trim leggy growth just above a leaf node to encourage a fuller shape.
  • Repotting: Check roots each spring and move up one pot size when crowded, using fresh well-draining mix and maintaining the original planting depth.
  • Propagation: Take a healthy stem-tip cutting with at least one node from an established plant. Root in a lightly moist, airy medium under warm, humid, bright indirect conditions; new growth signals establishment.
