Watch Chain (Crassula muscosa) forms branching green stems covered in tiny, tightly overlapping leaves. Its chainlike texture adds an unusual accent to a bright windowsill or sheltered patio, gradually growing into a finely textured miniature shrub.
Points of interest
- Tiny leaves overlap in four rows, giving each slender stem its distinctive geometric appearance.
- Upright shoots branch freely and may arch outward as they grow.
- Also known as the zipper plant for its closely fitted foliage.
- Stem cuttings offer a simple way to propagate and fill out a planting.
What you’ll receive and mature size
You’ll receive one live Watch Chain succulent growing in a 4-inch nursery pot. Shipping height, branching and fullness vary naturally. Established plants commonly reach approximately 6–12 inches tall and can spread into a wider clump over time. Decorative terracotta pots and styling props are not included.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright light with gentle morning sun. Acclimate gradually to stronger sunlight and protect from intense afternoon heat. Too little light can produce stretched, weak growth.
- Water: Allow the mix to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain completely. Reduce watering during cool or low-light periods. Do not leave the pot standing in water.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with pumice or perlite, in a pot with drainage holes. Ready to repot? Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately.
- Temperature and humidity: Ordinary indoor temperatures and low to average humidity are suitable. Provide airflow and protect from frost, freezing temperatures and prolonged cold rain.
- Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth with a slow-release fertilizer, following the label directions. Avoid feeding a stressed plant or fertilizing heavily during winter. Ready to feed? Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents for steady nutrition for cacti and succulents, sold separately. Skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
- Pruning: Trim overly long or damaged stems with clean scissors to encourage a tidy, branching shape. Remove dry material gently from within the clump.
- Repotting: Repot when roots crowd the container, using a slightly larger pot and fresh gritty mix. Keep the stem bases at their original soil level.
- Propagation: Take healthy stem cuttings and allow cut ends to dry before inserting them into well-draining mix. Water sparingly while roots develop; avoid persistently wet soil.
Pet and child safety
