Tillandsia Ixioides Air Plant, 3–5 Inches
Tillandsia ixioides brings sculptural, silvery-green foliage to a bright windowsill or airy plant display. Its narrow, gently arching leaves form an open rosette, and its yellow flowers offer a cheerful surprise when the plant reaches its blooming stage. This soil-free air plant makes a striking accent on driftwood or in an open holder.
Points of interest
- Silvery-green leaves with a naturally frosted appearance.
- An open, starburst-shaped rosette with gently arching foliage.
- Yellow flowers when in bloom; a flowering plant is not guaranteed.
- Grows without potting soil and is suitable for well-ventilated displays.
- Can produce offsets, or pups, as it matures.
What ships and estimated mature size
You will receive one live Tillandsia ixioides air plant, approximately 3–5 inches in size. Size, shape, and color vary naturally. Driftwood, holders, glass orbs, and other decorative accessories shown in photos are not included and are separate purchases.
Mature rosettes can grow beyond the shipping size, often reaching roughly 6–8 inches across under favorable conditions. Growth and eventual size depend on light, watering, and growing conditions; a developing cluster of offsets may become wider.
Optional display pairing
Display loosely on driftwood, cork, or in an open air-plant holder that lets air circulate around the base. Keep the plant removable for watering whenever possible. Avoid burying the base in soil or packing it into damp moss, and do not use a sealed terrarium. Decorative accessories are sold separately.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun can be suitable after gradual acclimation, but avoid intense afternoon sun through glass.
- Watering: As a starting point, soak an unmounted plant in room-temperature water for about 20–30 minutes once a week. Adjust for your environment: warm, dry rooms may need more frequent watering, while cool, humid conditions need less. Shake off excess water and dry upside down or on its side in a breezy spot. The plant should dry completely within a few hours. Never leave water trapped at the base or return it wet to an enclosed holder.
- Mounted plants: If the plant cannot be removed, thoroughly wet the foliage and allow it to drain and dry with excellent airflow. Avoid keeping the mounting material constantly damp. Do not submerge open flowers.
- Soil: No soil is needed. Roots primarily help anchor the plant; moisture is absorbed through the leaves.
- Humidity and airflow: Normal household humidity can work with an appropriate watering routine. Good airflow is essential, especially after watering. Misting alone may not provide enough water in a dry room.
- Temperature: Keep in a comfortable, frost-free setting, ideally around 60–85°F. Protect from freezing temperatures, cold drafts, and hot air from heating vents.
- Feeding: During active growth, use a fertilizer specifically labeled for air plants or bromeliads at the recommended dilution and frequency. Do not place slow-release fertilizer pellets against the plant.
- Grooming: Remove fully dried outer leaves gently and trim dry leaf tips with clean scissors if desired. Preserve healthy leaves and avoid rubbing away the silvery leaf coating.
- Repotting: Repotting is unnecessary. Move to a larger, more open holder when the display becomes crowded.
- Propagation: Allow pups to develop on the parent plant. They can remain attached to form a cluster, or be separated carefully once they are about one-third to one-half the parent’s size. Each rosette flowers once, then gradually directs its energy toward offsets.
Pet safety: Tillandsia air plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
