Tillandsia intermedia is a distinctive air plant with long, twisting leaves that curl into graceful loops. Its silvery-green foliage and tapered base create a sculptural silhouette, making it a striking choice for a bright shelf or an airy hanging display. Each plant develops its own natural pattern of curls.

Points of interest

  • Long, narrow leaves with natural twists and loops.
  • Silvery-green foliage and a tapered, bulb-like base.
  • Grows without potting soil.
  • Can produce offsets along its flowering stem, creating a branching or cascading form over time.
  • Well suited to open displays with excellent airflow.

What ships and estimated mature size

You will receive one live Tillandsia intermedia air plant, approximately 4–6 inches in size. Leaf length, curl, color, and overall shape vary naturally. A flowering plant or an established chain of offsets is not guaranteed. Holders, driftwood, and other decorative accessories shown in photos are not included and are separate purchases.

Mature plants can grow beyond the shipping size, with leaves extending roughly 8–12 inches or more under favorable conditions. Plants allowed to retain offsets can form longer, branching displays. These are estimates rather than guaranteed dimensions.

Optional display pairing

Choose an open air-plant holder, loose driftwood display, or ventilated hanging support that does not squeeze the base or trap moisture. Keep the plant removable for watering whenever possible. Do not bury the base in soil, fill it with damp moss, or place it in a sealed terrarium. Display accessories are sold separately.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation. Avoid harsh afternoon sun through glass.
  • Watering: Start with a thorough dunk or brief soak in room-temperature water about once a week, adjusting to the warmth, humidity, and airflow in your space. Shake out excess water and dry upside down in a well-ventilated spot. Pay special attention to the overlapping leaves around the base: trapped water can cause rot. The plant should dry completely within a few hours. Avoid prolonged soaking, especially in cool conditions, and do not submerge open flowers.
  • Mounted plants: If the plant cannot be removed from its display, wet the foliage thoroughly and let it drain freely. Avoid leaving the support continually damp.
  • Soil: No potting soil is needed. Roots mainly anchor the plant, while the leaves absorb moisture.
  • Humidity and airflow: Provide steady air circulation and avoid enclosed, humid containers. In dry rooms, supplement watering as needed; light misting alone may not fully hydrate the plant.
  • Temperature: Keep frost-free, ideally around 60–85°F. Protect from cold drafts, freezing temperatures, and direct heating-vent airflow.
  • Feeding: Use an air-plant or bromeliad fertilizer according to its label during active growth. Do not put slow-release pellets against the plant.
  • Grooming: Gently remove fully dried leaves and trim brown tips with clean scissors if desired. Do not straighten or force the natural curls, and avoid rubbing away the silvery leaf coating.
  • Repotting: Repotting is unnecessary. Move to a larger or more open support as the plant and its offsets develop.
  • Propagation: Leave offsets attached for a branching display, or separate them carefully when they are approximately one-third to one-half the parent’s size. Intermedia can develop offsets along the flowering stem as well as near the base, so avoid cutting away healthy stems carrying developing pups.

Pet safety: Tillandsia air plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
