Tillandsia aeranthos ‘Purple Giant’ adds an airy, architectural shape to your plant display with narrow, pointed leaves that spread and gently arch from an elongated stem. Its green-to-purple foliage offers subtle color, while a colorful bloom display adds interest when the plant reaches flowering stage. Enjoy it on an open holder or driftwood in a bright, well-ventilated spot.

Points of interest

  • Narrow, arching leaves and an open, sculptural silhouette.
  • Green-to-purple foliage; coloration varies with light and growing conditions.
  • Colorful red-to-pink flowering bracts and blue-to-violet flowers when in bloom.
  • Grows without potting soil and absorbs moisture through its leaves.
  • Can form a larger cluster as offsets develop.

What ships and estimated mature size

You will receive one live Tillandsia aeranthos ‘Purple Giant’ air plant, approximately 4–6 inches in size. Shape, fullness, and color vary naturally. The original photo shows a developing bloom, but a flowering plant is not guaranteed. Driftwood, holders, glass orbs, and other display accessories are not included and are sold separately.

Individual mature plants can extend beyond the shipping size, often reaching roughly 8–12 inches, depending on growing conditions. Retained offsets can create a wider cluster over time. These dimensions are estimates, not guaranteed sizes.

Optional display pairing

Choose driftwood, cork, or an open air-plant holder that supports the plant loosely and allows airflow around its base. Keep it removable for watering whenever possible. Avoid soil, constantly damp moss, and sealed terrariums. Decorative accessories are sold separately.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation; avoid intense afternoon sun through glass. Purple coloration varies naturally, so do not expose the plant to harsh sun simply to deepen its color.
  • Watering: Start with a 20–30-minute soak in room-temperature water about once a week. Adjust for your conditions: warm, dry spaces may need more frequent watering, while cool, humid spaces need less. Shake off excess water and let the plant dry on its side or upside down with excellent airflow. It should dry fully within a few hours. Keep open flowers above the water.
  • Mounted plants: If the plant cannot be removed, thoroughly wet its foliage and let it drain freely. Do not leave its mounting material continually damp.
  • Soil: No potting soil is needed. Roots chiefly anchor the plant; the leaves absorb moisture.
  • Humidity and airflow: Normal household humidity can work with appropriate watering. Maintain good air circulation, especially after soaking. Misting alone may not supply enough moisture in a dry room.
  • Temperature: Keep in a frost-free setting, ideally around 60–85°F. Protect from freezing temperatures, cold drafts, and hot air from heating vents.
  • Feeding: Use a fertilizer labeled for air plants or bromeliads according to its dilution and frequency instructions during active growth. Do not place slow-release fertilizer pellets against the plant.
  • Grooming: Gently remove fully dried outer leaves. Trim dry tips with clean scissors if desired, avoiding healthy leaf tissue. Remove a spent flowering stalk once it is dry, taking care not to damage developing offsets.
  • Repotting: Repotting is unnecessary. Move the plant to a larger, more open display as it grows.
  • Propagation: Keep pups attached to form a cluster, or carefully separate them once they reach about one-third to one-half the parent’s size. Each rosette blooms once and then gradually directs its energy toward offsets.

Pet safety: Tillandsia air plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
