String of Pickles (Othonna capensis), also called Ruby Beads or Ruby Necklace, has slender trailing stems lined with fleshy, pickle-shaped leaves. Foliage may blush purple in bright light, while color varies naturally with growing conditions. This rooted young plant can develop cascading growth for a bright shelf with time.

Points of interest and size

  • One live, fully rooted plant in a 4-inch nursery grow pot. Current fullness and stem length vary naturally.
  • Estimated mature trailing length: approximately 1–2 feet, sometimes longer with suitable care. Trim to manage length; mature trailing size is not the shipping size.
  • Bright light can bring out purple tones. Small yellow daisy-like flowers may appear under favorable conditions; blooms are not guaranteed.
  • Live arrival guaranteed.

What you receive

One live String of Pickles in its 4-inch nursery grow pot. Photos show the variety, not a guaranteed exact plant, vine length, or purple color. Decorative planters and furnishings are not included.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide very bright light and gradually acclimate to direct sun. An established plant can tolerate stronger sun, but protect from sudden intense afternoon heat. Low light may cause stretched growth and greener foliage.
  • Water: Allow the mix to dry substantially between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain. Avoid persistently wet roots or standing water. Check more often during active growth in warm, bright conditions; reduce frequency during cooler, dimmer periods or inactivity.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately; amend with pumice or perlite as needed for drainage.
  • Temperature and humidity: Warm indoor conditions and average to low humidity suit it. Provide airflow and protect from frost, freezing conditions, and cold drafts.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth according to fertilizer label directions. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Avoid overfeeding; reduce or pause during winter or inactivity and extreme heat or cold. Avoid feeding stressed or newly repotted plants.
  • Pruning: Trim long or sparse stems above a node with clean scissors to encourage branching. Handle fleshy stems gently and remove damaged growth.
  • Repotting: When roots crowd the pot or the mix breaks down, move up one pot size into fresh fast-draining mix during active growth. Maintain the original planting depth and avoid a much larger volume of wet soil.
  • Propagation: Take healthy stem cuttings with nodes, remove lower leaves, and allow cut ends to dry briefly before placing in airy succulent mix. Water sparingly as roots establish in warm, bright indirect light.
