String of Pearls (Curio rowleyanus, formerly Senecio rowleyanus) grows slender trailing stems threaded with round green leaves. Give it a bright shelf or a securely supported hanging planter, and watch its beadlike foliage gradually spill over the edge.

Points of interest

  • Round, pea-shaped leaves store water and give this succulent its distinctive necklace-like appearance.
  • A narrow translucent window on each leaf lets light reach the leaf’s interior.
  • Young plants are compact; established stems lengthen into graceful trails.
  • Stems can root where they touch suitable soil, making propagation a rewarding way to fill out a pot.

What you’ll receive and mature size

  • 2-pack: Two live plants, each growing in a 2-inch nursery pot.
  • 4-inch option: One live plant growing in a 4-inch nursery pot.

Select your preferred option before adding to your cart. Shipping stem length, fullness and leaf size vary naturally; smaller-pot plants are younger and should not be expected to arrive with mature trails. Established stems can reach approximately 2–3 feet long under suitable conditions. Decorative terracotta pots, hanging planters and styling props are not included.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide very bright light with gentle morning sun when possible. Let light reach the top of the pot as well as the trailing stems to maintain growth at the crown. Acclimate gradually to direct sun and protect from intense afternoon heat.
  • Water: Allow the mix to dry thoroughly between waterings. Bottom watering is recommended: place the potted plant in a shallow dish of water and allow it to absorb moisture through the drainage holes for several hours, checking periodically until the mix is hydrated. Keep the water below the pot rim so the top of the plant stays mostly dry. Remove the pot from the dish and let excess water drain completely afterward; do not leave it standing in water between waterings. Reduce watering during cool or low-light periods.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with pumice or perlite, and a container with drainage holes. Ready to repot? Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately.
  • Temperature and humidity: Average indoor temperatures and ordinary to low humidity are suitable. Provide airflow and protect from frost, freezing temperatures and prolonged cold rain.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a slow-release fertilizer, following the label directions. Avoid fertilizing a stressed plant or feeding heavily during winter. Ready to feed? Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents for steady nutrition for cacti and succulents, sold separately. Skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
  • Pruning: Trim damaged or overly long stems with clean scissors. Healthy cuttings can be used to fill sparse areas of the pot.
  • Repotting: Repot only when needed into a slightly larger container. Handle the delicate stems gently and keep the crown near the soil surface rather than burying it deeply.
  • Propagation: Let cut stem ends dry briefly, then lay healthy stems on gritty mix with several nodes touching the soil. Keep lightly moist, not waterlogged, while roots develop; return to a drier succulent watering routine once established.

Pet and child safety

String of Pearls is toxic if ingested by pets or people, and its sap may irritate skin. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and wash your hands after handling.
