Turn a wall into a living display with an extra-large mounted Staghorn Fern. Platycerium ‘Netherlands’ grows in a Kokedama-style moss mount secured to a 12 × 16-inch wooden plaque with sturdy hanging wire, arriving ready to display indoors or in a protected outdoor space.

Plant characteristics

  • Mount: 12 × 16-inch wooden plaque with hanging wire
  • Foliage: Produces upright and arching antler-shaped fertile fronds plus rounded shield fronds at the base
  • Shield-frond note: Basal shield fronds naturally turn tan or brown as they mature. This protective layer is normal and should not be removed.
  • Growth habit: Epiphytic fern that grows outward from its mount rather than in soil
  • Mature size: With suitable care, the fronds can extend 2–3 feet or more and create a broad, sculptural display
  • Pet safety: Staghorn Ferns are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although chewing any plant material can cause digestive discomfort

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged hot afternoon sun.
  • Water: When the moss mount feels mostly dry, soak the mounted root ball in room-temperature water for about 10–20 minutes, generally around once a week. Allow it to drain thoroughly before rehanging. Adjust the schedule for temperature, humidity, airflow, and season rather than watering on the calendar alone.
  • Mounting medium: This fern grows in its moss mount and does not need conventional potting soil. Do not bury or remove the shield fronds.
  • Humidity and airflow: Prefers moderate to high humidity with good airflow. Bathrooms with bright light, covered patios, and humid indoor plant areas can work well.
  • Temperature: Keep in a warm location and protect from frost, cold drafts, and temperatures below approximately 50°F.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed about once a month with a balanced fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Apply it during watering and avoid fertilizer buildup in the moss.
  • Pruning: Remove only fully dead or damaged antler fronds with clean tools. Do not peel away brown shield fronds, because they protect the roots and mounting area.
  • Propagation: Mature plants can produce offsets, or pups, around the base. These may remain attached to create a larger colony or be separated carefully once established.
  • Mount care: Hang from secure hardware appropriate for the combined weight of the wood, wet moss, and growing plant. Protect indoor walls and flooring from drips after watering.
