Shark Tooth Orchid Cactus, 6-Inch Hanging Pot

Shark Tooth Orchid Cactus brings bold tropical texture to a hanging display with broad, flattened green stems and deeply notched edges. Upright new growth gradually arches and trails, creating a layered silhouette that stands apart from desert cacti. Give this epiphytic cactus bright filtered light and an airy root environment to enjoy its distinctive shape as the stems lengthen.

Points of interest

  • Broad, flattened stems have deeply lobed zigzag edges; these leaf-like structures are stems, not ordinary leaves.
  • Arching and trailing growth suits basket culture and elevated displays.
  • This tropical epiphytic cactus prefers filtered light and more regular moisture during growth than many desert cacti.
  • Mature plants may produce showy flowers under favorable conditions, but blooms are not guaranteed or included.
  • Sold under the source name Shark Tooth Orchid Cactus; this listing does not promise a particular flower color or an unverified species identification.

What ships and estimated mature size

One live Shark Tooth Orchid Cactus rooted in a 6-inch nursery hanging pot with a wire or plastic hanger. The measurement describes the pot, not stem length or total spread. Stem count, fullness, orientation and trailing length vary naturally. Decorative terracotta pots and other furnishings shown in styled photos are not included and are sold separately.

Estimated mature stems may reach approximately 2–3 feet long or more over time, forming a wider arching or trailing clump. Eventual size depends on light, root space, age and pruning. Mature dimensions are not the shipping size.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect or filtered light. Gentle early morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation. Avoid harsh midday or afternoon sun, which can scorch the flattened stems. Outdoor displays need sheltered, filtered light rather than exposed desert conditions.
  • Water: During active growth, let the upper portion of the mix dry before watering thoroughly, then drain completely. Check moisture below the surface and pot weight rather than following a fixed schedule. Avoid both constantly soggy soil and prolonged severe drying of the entire root ball.
  • Seasonal adjustments: Reduce watering when temperatures cool and growth slows, allowing more drying between waterings. Warmth, airflow and active growth can increase water needs. Never compensate for heat by keeping the mix permanently saturated.
  • Soil and drainage: Use a loose, airy epiphytic-cactus mix in a pot with drainage holes. Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend is sold separately; amend with orchid bark and additional perlite or pumice as needed for an open, well-aerated mix. Avoid heavy soil, tightly packed roots and oversized wet pots.
  • Temperature: Warm indoor conditions around 60–80°F suit active growth. Protect from frost, prolonged chilling, heater blasts and cold drafts. Bring seasonal outdoor displays inside before cold weather.
  • Humidity and airflow: Moderate humidity is helpful, with gentle airflow around stems. Avoid stagnant damp conditions. Misting does not replace appropriate root watering or maintain room humidity.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth following the label. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately. Follow container-size directions, avoid combining full doses of multiple fertilizers and reduce or pause feeding when growth slows. Do not fertilize dry roots or a stressed plant.
  • Hanging display: Use a securely installed hook and support rated for the fully watered basket. Check the hanger and attachment points regularly. Leave room for stems to arch without being pinched against a wall, and protect furniture from drips after watering.
  • Pruning: Use clean tools to remove damaged stems or shorten overly long growth if desired. Handle stems gently to avoid snapping them. Do not prune heavily when buds are present.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots crowd the basket or the mix deteriorates, preferably during active growth. Move up only slightly and retain drainage. Avoid unnecessary repotting immediately after arrival.
  • Propagation: Healthy stem sections can be propagated after the cut surface dries and calluses. Set into an airy, lightly moist rooting medium under warm indirect light. Avoid burying large portions of the stem or keeping an unrooted cutting soggy.
  • Pests and warning signs: Inspect stem joints and undersides for mealybugs, scale and mites. Isolate affected plants and use an appropriate labeled treatment, testing a small area first. Wrinkling can reflect dryness or damaged roots; check the mix and roots before watering more. Soft, dark tissue can indicate rot.
  • After arrival: Unpack carefully around the hanging stems, check the hanger and place in bright indirect light. Assess moisture before watering and let the plant settle before repotting or major pruning.
