Sempervivum calcareum Hen and Chicks Succulent, 4-Inch Pot
Sempervivum calcareum forms neat green rosettes with contrasting dark red tips. Smaller offsets, the “chicks,” develop around larger parent rosettes, creating a growing colony with a beautifully patterned, low-profile shape. It is a natural choice for sunny, well-drained containers and rock-garden settings.
Points of interest
- Pointed, fleshy green leaves with dark red tips.
- Offsetting rosettes gradually form a spreading colony.
- Leaf color, rosette size, and offset count vary with season, light, and individual plant.
- Best suited to bright outdoor growing conditions rather than a dim indoor display.
Current and mature size
You receive one rooted plant in a 4-inch plastic nursery pot. Photos show representative plants, and the number and size of rosettes may vary. Mature growth remains low and spreads through offsets; individual rosettes grow to several inches across, while the colony can spread beyond the original pot over time.
Decorative pots and accessories shown in styled photos are not included and are sold separately.
Care guide
- Light: Provide a sunny outdoor position, introducing stronger sunlight gradually after shipping. In very hot conditions, some afternoon shade can help prevent scorch. If grown indoors temporarily, choose a very bright window and watch for stretching.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess drain. Avoid leaving water trapped in rosettes or standing in a saucer. Water less during cool weather and slow growth.
- Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes. Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, sold separately. Avoid heavy soil that stays wet.
- Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed with a slow-release fertilizer. Ready to feed? Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents for steady nutrition for cacti and succulents. Skip feeding while growth is paused, extreme heat or cold. Fertilizer is sold separately; use sparingly and follow its label.
- Seasonal care: Sempervivum prefers outdoor light and seasonal conditions. Protect newly received plants from sudden extremes. Cold-weather performance depends on local conditions and drainage, especially in containers; avoid prolonged winter wetness.
- Maintenance: Remove dry lower leaves gently and divide offsets when they have developed roots. A rosette may flower once and then die back; surrounding offsets continue the colony.
Pet safety: Sempervivum calcareum is considered non-toxic to pets.
