Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamerei), 4-Inch Pot
Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamerei) pairs a spiny, water-storing trunk with a crown of long, narrow green leaves. Despite its common name, this sculptural succulent is not a true palm. A young plant brings bold texture to a bright display and develops a taller trunk as it grows.
Points of interest
- Spiny succulent trunk with a crown of narrow green leaves.
- Upright, architectural growth rather than palm fronds.
- May shed leaves during cool-season dormancy or changes in conditions.
- Slow development into a larger specimen; flowers are not guaranteed at shipping.
Current and mature size
You receive one rooted young plant in a 4-inch plastic nursery pot. Photos show representative plants; trunk height, leaf number, and spread vary. It can eventually become several feet tall in a suitable container, and outdoor plants in suitable climates may grow substantially larger. Mature dimensions depend on conditions and years of growth; this is not a shipping-height guarantee.
Decorative pots shown in styled photos are sold separately. Choose a stable container with drainage holes and room for the spiny trunk; avoid oversized pots that hold excess moisture.
Care guide
- Light: Provide very bright light with direct sun after gradual acclimation. A sunny window is preferable to low light. Protect from abrupt exposure to intense sun when moving outdoors.
- Water: During warm, leafy active growth, let the mix dry well between thorough waterings and drain completely. Do not maintain evenly wet soil or leave the nursery pot standing in water. Reduce watering sharply when growth slows or leaves drop; a cool, leafless plant needs very little water. Adjust to its growth stage rather than following a fixed calendar.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, sold separately. Add mineral grit as needed for drainage. Do not add peat simply to lower pH or use moisture-holding palm soil.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth. Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately. Follow its label, avoid overfeeding, and skip feeding during dormancy, leafless slow growth, or extreme heat or cold.
- Temperature: Keep warm and frost-free, away from cold drafts. Bring outdoor containers inside before cold weather. Protect from prolonged cool, wet conditions and rain that prevents the mix from drying.
- Humidity: Ordinary indoor humidity and gentle airflow are suitable. Do not mist as a substitute for root watering.
- Maintenance: Handle with sturdy gloves and avoid the sharp spines. Repot carefully when roots crowd the container, choosing a stable, modestly larger pot with drainage. Seasonal leaf loss can be normal, but soft tissue or a persistently wet root ball calls for closer inspection. Avoid unnecessary trunk cuts and contact with sap.
Pet safety: Toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children; sharp spines can cause injury, and sap can irritate skin and eyes.
