Lithops living stone succulents resemble small patterned pebbles, with paired fleshy leaves divided by a central slit. Their subtle colors and intricate markings reward a close look, making a bright windowsill feel like a miniature desert landscape.

Points of interest

  • Pebble-like camouflage helps these small succulents blend into their native surroundings.
  • Each head consists of a pair of thick leaves with patterned upper surfaces.
  • New leaves develop inside the old pair, gradually drawing moisture from them as they emerge.
  • Mature plants may produce yellow or white daisy-like flowers, depending on the variety.

What you’ll receive and mature size

You’ll receive live Lithops growing in a 2.5-inch nursery pot. Varieties, colors, markings and the number of heads vary; a specific variety or head count is not guaranteed. Individual heads generally remain approximately 1–2 inches across and low to the soil surface. Some plants gradually divide into additional heads over time. Decorative terracotta pots and styling props are not included.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide very bright light with gentle direct sun. Introduce stronger sun gradually to prevent scorching. Watch for stretching, which can indicate insufficient light, and protect small pots from intense heat behind glass.
  • Water: Follow the plant’s growth stage, not a weekly schedule. During active growth, water cautiously only after the mix dries thoroughly and the plant shows a need for moisture. While a new leaf pair is emerging and the old leaves remain fleshy, withhold watering so the plant can use moisture from the old pair. Resume cautiously once the old leaves have dried to papery remnants. Summer dormancy also calls for little or no water; avoid soaking dormant plants. When watering is appropriate, drain completely and never leave the pot standing in water.
  • Soil: Use a highly mineral, exceptionally fast-draining mix with plenty of pumice, grit or coarse mineral material and little moisture-retentive organic matter. Choose a draining container deep enough for the roots. Ready to repot? Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, hand-blended in small batches and sold separately. For Lithops, amend the blend generously with mineral material to maintain the exceptionally fast drainage and low organic content described above.
  • Temperature and humidity: Provide good airflow and low humidity when possible. Protect from frost, freezing temperatures, prolonged rain and excessive heat in enclosed spaces.
  • Feeding: Fertilizer is rarely needed. If using a slow-release fertilizer, feed very sparingly during active growth only and follow the label directions. Ready to feed? Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents for steady nutrition for cacti and succulents, sold separately. Never feed during dormancy or leaf replacement. Skip feeding while growth is paused or during extreme heat or cold.
  • Pruning: Do not cut healthy leaves or pull off old leaves while they are still fleshy. Let the old pair dry naturally before gently removing loose papery remnants.
  • Repotting: Repot infrequently and handle the roots gently. Keep the leaf tops above the mix and avoid burying the plant deeply. Allow damaged roots time to recover before cautiously resuming appropriate watering.
  • Propagation: Seed is the usual method. Multi-headed plants may sometimes be divided if each division retains roots, but this is slow-growing and best attempted by experienced growers.

Pet and child safety

Lithops are generally considered non-toxic to pets and people.
